Modern agriculture is developed based on current industry and modern science and technology. It emerged during capitalist industrialization as an advanced form of agriculture.
Its main features include the extensive use of modern science and technology, shifting from conforming to nature to consciously utilizing and transforming nature, and from relying on traditional experience to relying on science.
It is characterized by being built on the highly developed foundation of sciences such as botany, zoology, chemistry, and physics. Modern agriculture integrates many materials and energy produced by industrial sectors into agricultural production in exchange for a large quantity of farm products, thus becoming industrialized agriculture.
Agricultural production has transitioned towards regionalization and specialization, evolving from a natural economy to a highly developed commodity economy, becoming commercialized and socialized agriculture.
Many definitions of modern agriculture utilize terms starting with "modern," such as modern science and technology, modern equipment, modern management, etc. However, the term "modern" only reflects a historical comparison with ancient, medieval, and contemporary times without fully capturing key scientific content such as scientific and technological development, economic development, and environmental development.
Given that both "modern" and "contemporary" generally agree, different levels of agricultural production coexist due to regional imbalances in development. For instance, some articles point out that due to the numerous drawbacks of modern agriculture, scholars have proposed alternative models, such as sustainable agriculture.
Sustainable agriculture aims to improve modern agriculture and encompasses various types, including organic, ecological, sustainable, contemporary intensive, facility, and circular agriculture.
Therefore, replacing the term "modern" with "advanced" in the definition of modern agriculture, for example, using "advanced science and technology" instead of "modern science and technology," would clarify the scientific connotation of contemporary agriculture. While "modern" is representative of advancement, its contemporaneity in time allows anyone from any era to refer to their time as current.
However, the essential difference between advancement and backwardness lies in the concept of time and, more importantly, in the different levels of scientific and technological development. Thus, modern agriculture should be regarded as the advanced agricultural form and system of the contemporary era.
How to promote the development of modern agriculture:
1. Solidly promote the construction of agricultural modernization and establish a modern agricultural industry system featuring mechanization, base-based (large-scale), informatization (digitalization), intensification, and branding.
Promote the integrated development of production, supply, and marketing; establish agricultural industrial parks; create a new image of intelligent agriculture; standardize management; promote market-oriented increase in the commercialization rate of farm products; prioritize the development of grain production within the construction of modern agriculture to ensure national food security.
2. Interpret "big agriculture" from the perspective of different economic operation laws, shifting from pursuing output to pursuing efficiency and benefits.
Transform "small-scale farming thinking," adopt methods such as company + cooperative + farmers and family farms + cooperatives, shift from feature orientation to industrial orientation, transform the logic of industrial development from scale orientation to industrialization orientation, use technological innovation as a means, with quality and efficiency as the goal, build a modern agricultural industry system, and promote the strategic adjustment of agrarian structure.
3. Cultivate new types of professional farmers and improve the employment guarantee system for new kinds of experienced farmers. Reduce the number of farmers, improve farmer quality, increase agricultural output, further increase agrarian subsidies, and accelerate the construction of a new agricultural social service system that combines public welfare services with business services and coordinates specialized services with comprehensive services.
4. Vigorously develop diverse characteristic agricultural industries per the requirements of building an ecological civilization, coordinately promote the sustainable development of green agriculture, and create a modern agrarian development system integrating leisure agriculture, sightseeing agriculture, vertical agriculture, contract agriculture, and industrial agriculture.
As time progresses, society advances, and science and technology develop, the connotations and standards of modern agriculture will continue to enrich, perfect, and improve, leading to a more precise concept and definition of contemporary agriculture.
